Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro 1 Gallon Ceramic Compost Keeper, White

Customer Review: Way better than plastic bags.
Summary: 5 Stars

For years, I've been hauling dripping, icky plant matter to my compost bin using whatever was handy, mostly plastic bags or containers from vegetables. Aside from being messy, it went against any green impulses I have by using plastic that then had to be tossed, rather than recycled. This crock, while kind of big, allows me to hold vegetable cast-offs on the counter in an attractive container that keeps fruit flies at bay. It also lets me postpone the inevitable trip to the garden because it holds more than your average plastic bag. It's a one gallon container that is tall, rather than spread out. There's a charcoal filter in the lid to staunch the stench and, as mentioned above, deter any fruit flies that magically appear around peelings. If you're looking for a way to facilitate composting, this may help you. Now, if they'd only come up with something that would actually take it outside for me, that would be excellent. This particular crock does everything the more expensive crocks do. The filter is replaceable and can be purchased separately.

Customer Review: A hard-working beauty!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this crock for about ten years, and am buying a new one only because I've chipped the rim deeply enough that some odors are escaping. It is beautiful on the counter - big, but coordinates with white ceramic canisters. Holds a LOT of stuff, and because it's so sturdy you can keep crunching stuff down as you add more. We've forgotten to empty it before a two-week summer vacation and found lots of new life inside but NO odors escaped! Handle makes it easy to carry, but was sometimes hard to dump out really impacted contents until we hit on the idea of simply putting a small paper towel in the bottom. It's pretty heavy to carry out when full, but that's the only real downside ... other than the fact that we finally found out, as sturdy as it is, it's ceramic and so not indestructible - though it took a LOT of bumps before chipping.

Customer Review: Love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this crock about a month ago because I was sick of having a bowl of food sitting on my counter. I love it! It is attractive enough to leave on my counter (I keep hoping no one mistakes it for a cookie jar and reaches in!), it's durable, and easy to clean. I haven't had any problems with the handle, and I empty it almost every day. To clean it, I just take out the charcoal filter and put it in the dishwasher. There is no odor, even if you forget to empty it for a few days. It's not the right time of year for fruit flies, but I figure I get them every year anyway. If they're attracted to this, maybe it will at least keep them contained! I would recommend it to anyone.

Customer Review: Pretty, but breakable.
Summary: 5 Stars

So I bought this container about 3 months ago and we thought it was great. I had to get one after I found out that one household composting for a year rather than trashing it is like taking 8 million cars off the road. We loved it, it decreased our trash, looks good on the counter, we can put it in the dishwasher when it gets really nasty, the size is good. But today, after emptying it in my green bin, I was holding it by the handle and it must have come unhooked at the handles because it fell and broke. So I'm back on Amazon and deciding whether to go with the stainless or this one again. It really does look good on the counter and stainless might show fingerprints.

Customer Review: Great Purchase! Inexpensive and Nice
Summary: 5 Stars

I contemplated this purchase for a few months after reading some of the negative reviews but decided to purchase anyways since it was less than $20 and the least expensive I could find unless buying a plastic compost keeper. I'm glad I purchased this item. I have had the compost keeper for a few weeks now; no smells when lid is on, I do not find the container heavy, no fruit flies, holds a weeks worth of scraps including everyday coffee grounds, I have not had to change out the filter yet even though I bought extras, when I carry the container I make sure that I hold it by the bottom as well as the handle... I could keep going but basically, this works great for me!
