Customer Review: Compost keeper is a winner. Summary: 5 Stars
This compost keeper does just what it's supposed to do and looks good while doing it.
Customer Review: Works great if you can keep the lid off Summary: 4 Stars
When we first decided to start vermicomposting, we knew we needed something to contain our kitchen scraps for the week so as not to disturb our worm community too much. We decided on this compost keeper because the price was right, the reviews were pretty good and the color went well with our decor. It ended up being perfect for our needs BUT we don't use it exactly as it is intended.
First, the good. The design fit right in with my lineup of white porcelain bowls and cake stands. It looks like it was meant to be displayed with them, just as I'd hoped. The size is perfect for about a week of scraps from two people. We eat a good amount of vegetables, though. If you are more than two people and eat a ton of veggies, you'd be emptying this pretty frequently, so I might consider a larger size. Lastly, the handle makes it easy to pick up and bring out to the composter. Even though it's just a thick wire bent around two nubs, the handle on our piece seems to be fitted well. It doesn't look like it'll slip off unless we really force it, and the handle itself is thick enough that we wont bend it on accident.
Now for what I didn't care for. I believe the intent of this compost keeper was to hide your kitchen scraps while still allowing them to breathe through the little holes in the lid. The filter is supposed to keep out any smells that develop from the old scraps. As I mentioned before, we don't use this keeper exactly as intended, and the lid design is the reason for that. When we used it with the lid, things got nasty. The lid filter did indeed do it's job and kept odors inside the crock, but once you lifted the lid...eeeewwww. Nasty smells abound. It seems that the filter not only kept odors inside, but it kept moisture inside the crock as well leading to nasty rotting smells and even mold. Gross. When we emptied the crock, more evidence of the excess moisture presented itself in the form of brown, stinky ooze at the bottom of the crock. Ick.
Instead of giving up on this compost keeper, I decided to try leaving the lid off, and what do you know? It worked. No smells. No mold. No brown ooze. Just perfectly slightly dessicated kitchen scraps to give our worms to turn into compost. (I should also note that we don't have a problem with fruit flies in our area. If you do, then you might not be able to use it this way) I do understand that using it this way means we spent $20 on an interestingly designed bowl with a handle, but it works for us. When it's just us at home, we leave it open. If we have company over, we just pop the lid on sans filter and it looks like one of my display pieces. So I guess, in the end, it does do it's job of hiding the veggie scraps, but only when needed.
Customer Review: Common Sense Solution Summary: 4 Stars
I decided on ceramic over stainless based on maintaining my stainless appliances in a hard water area - they spot terribly and I just didn't want to have to deal with that.
I like this compost keeper. I think it's just the right size to put a few days worth of scraps in, the filter in the lid is a nice touch.
I have experienced the handle coming off one time - it slips right back on easily. Personally I like it because I can take the handle off to put the entire bucket into the dishwasher. Mine has all manner of veggie and fruit scraps as well as coffee grounds, but I have had little staining. After emptying it, I either gently handwash or run it through the dishwasher about once a week. So far, it has handled really well.
If you just use some common sense and treat it like a dish instead of like a pail, I think you'll be satisfied with this item. Plus it looks so much better on the counter than the old milk carton I was using. LOL!
