Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro 370 Bread Slicerand Guide with Crumb Catcher

Customer Review: Quickly became a staple at our home...
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading the reviews I was very torn about my decision, but without any real additional choices, went ahead. Well, I was not a bit disappointed. We have been using it over 6 months now, cutting more than a loaf each day, and we absolutely love it. Sure, it will wear out over time, but we put it to the test and it has held up great (even with some individuals in our home who tend to be pretty tough on things!). My husband remarks at least weekly "wow, I can't believe how much we use this thing!" and he is right, there in nothing in the kitchen that gets a more frequent workout~ except perhaps the handle on the refrigerator door! I had two main purposes for buying it~ one: because I have a seven-year-old who very much wants to cut her own bread (she is a very mature and careful type, no worries :-). I feel so safe with her using this because the knife is always far away from her hand. The second reason is because I have been using ground flaxseed in my bread in attempt to lower my cholesterol without a statin. I measured the flaxseed so that I would get two tablespoons in each three slices (as measured by this bread slicer). This takes out all the guesswork, and my cholesterol shot right down to within normal range~ woo hoo! Ok, that was a freebe :-). Anyway, we could not be more satisfied with this product and will not hesitate to purchase it again once this one is in need of retiring. Happy day! :-)

Customer Review: Wonderful Bread Slicer - Assumes User Understands How It's Designed
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read most of the reviews, and it appears that negative reviewers are not using a proper knife which must be 10+" long. For example, I use this one and let it gravity cut (with no downward pressure needed) it.

Forschner / Victorinox 10-1/4" Curved with Wavy Edge Fibrox Bread/Carving Knife - NSF Model 40547

It also has soft pine wood specifically so you don't dull your blade edge. If you wanted, you could use a simple saw to cut 1/8" deep slots into wood so knife would finish cutting bread without pressing on wood. Only takes a few minutes with a simple hand saw.

I use the Norpro non-stick pans which end up with a loaf that is 4" high and 5 3/4" wide, so the guide width of 6 3/8" x 5" high are the perfect sizes. To get perfect, consistent slices is a dream come true.

So, if you use a proper 10" bread knife, this is a great slicer for home bread makers.

Customer Review: Works great with frequent use
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this gizmo for about 4 or 5 months. It is great and easy to use. I use it at least two or three times a week since I bake all my own bread. I've used it to slice biscotti, french bread, italian bread, soft white bread, and anything else I have on hand. Sometimes, however, I bake too "fat" a loaf to fit in the slicer, especially a round "boule" loaf of over 1.5 pounds. I get around the problem by cutting the loaf in half and then slicing each half. Not as pretty, but it is a good work around.

Even my wife (normally a knife klutz) can get nice slices with no problems. The price is also reasonable.

The only sad thing is that since the crumb catcher is made of wood, sooner or later, I'll wear it out. Then I'll have to buy a new one. If you need even slices of bread (or want them) get this. It works fine for frequent use.

Customer Review: The best thing since unsliced bread!
Summary: 5 Stars

This product definitely increases my enjoyment of having a bread machine. When used properly, you get nice even slices that can be evenly toasted, or hearty sandwiches, or made into French toast.

This is a very simple tool but the craftsmanship is fine. You do need a long knife to make the best use; I have a 10 inch bread knife that I recommend.
Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 10-Inch Serrated Bread/Slicing Knife

The only way you can adjust the width of the slices is by moving the bread in the guide and even then, getting two slices a uniform width will take some talent. The set width is just fine for my needs.

Customer Review: It Works Great But...
Summary: 5 Stars

Make sure you have a 10 inch bread knife for this slicer. I ordered one at the same time I ordered the slicer, after viewing other people's complaints about their bread knife not being long enough. I also ordered an acrylic bread keeper that has a small cutting board that fits perfectly in the slicer, so there are no issues with the knife cutting into the wood.

I did have a problem with the bread slices being thicker than I wanted, and now I just move the bread slightly back from the guide to make them thinner. No problems at all and I love having nice, even, slices for sandwiches. Great product...it does the job, just get the right knife for it.
