Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro Cast Aluminum Tortilla PressCustomer Review: Great for making tortillas and pupusas Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this tortilla press because I wanted to make pupusas (El Salvadoran stuffed tortillas) with it. My workplace has a cafeteria and many people who work there are from other countries. One day they served pupusas in the cafeteria and I loved them so much I wanted to learn to make them at home. After researching the internet, I found several websites with pupusa recipes and videos showing how to make them. However, I had a hard time duplicating the ones that I had eaten at work when I made them using my hands. Since receiving the tortilla press, it is much easier to create pupusas like the ones I ate at work. Using wax paper to line the press creates great results with little mess to clean up.
Customer Review: This is the best Summary: 5 Stars
I was taught how to make them by hand by a woman from Honduras. She is 32 years old and has been making them since she was five. She is extremely good and also quick. She taught me. It takes a lot of time, patience and persistence. There is no way this could ever be a bad product. One very important thing to remember is that it also takes practice to learn how to make them. You have to be consistent on how hard you press in order to make them all the same thickness. Consistency of dough (keeps them from sticking) and a cut up ziploc plastic bag are the keys to good corn tortillas.
Customer Review: Sturdy, Well Made, Makes beautiful tortillas Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this and I wasn't disappointed. It is well built and makes nice tortillas. Some people say they can't get the tortillas thin. What I do is cut a storage size zip lock bag and leave the short side connected. When you press the tortilla, transfer the tortilla from the plastic to your hand and then to the grill. Others wanted burrito sized tortillas, I'm not sure corn tortillas will stay together if they are that big. If you want to make flour tortillas you have to roll them out and that way you can make them as big as you want.
Customer Review: Cast aluminum is the way to go Summary: 5 Stars
I checked out tortilla presses at Williams Sonoma and Sur la Table before getting this one. The others were crusted over with cheap chrome jobs, one that looked like goopy silver spray paint. One display model's finish was even chipping in the store - there's no way nasty flakes of chrome are going in my fresh tortillas! This press is cast aluminum and just beautiful. It works well and, if you use wax paper or plastic wrap when you press the dough, it doesn't require cleaning at all.
Customer Review: Pretty Neat Summary: 5 Stars
This little press sells at Williams-Sonoma for $20 plus a ton of shipping charges. I have to say, it is one of the neatest and most used presses I've ever owned. This SIMPLE press is a lot better than other "fancier" presses. Use wax paper or parchment to remove your tortilla without a hitch (like other reviews mentioned). It so worth it! I love the press and I love Amazon for always finding exact items without the pumped up prices.
