Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro Cast Aluminum Tortilla Press

Customer Review: Have Used for 10 years-Hard on the Arms and Neck
Summary: 3 Stars

Well I am not a muscular woman and I used this press for about 10 years. The last couple of years I've had my husband do the pressing as it takes too much out of me. The press itself does a fantastic job and it does exactly what it is supposed to do. I do believe the manufacture suggests pressing the dough and setting it aside to be cooked later, but we were taught to do it the "Mexican" way by using a heat source. So we press our tortillas with the press over the stove burner to get the heat source. We spray the tortilla maker with Pam cooking spray, place a small about of dough in it and press. If your press is sufficiently heated it will press the dough out about 1/2 - 3/4 of the way. Then using tongs we turn the pressed tortilla over and repeat the process. The traditional Mexican tacos are then filled with meat and beans and fried in another pan. I use a small amount of olive oil in the pan to keep the grease down to a minimum, but if you like the old fashioned greasy tacos then you can use a pan with vegetable oil and use a bit more. You only need to fry them until they are browned enough to your liking. A great time saver is to make up about 200-400 taco shells and put waxed paper between each shell and freeze them for quick tacos any time! Nothing beats a homemade taco. However, I'm retiring our cast press and upgrading to and electric press, should be much easier on little ole me...:-)).

Customer Review: Good within its limitations
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a sturdy tortilla press. Freshly made tortillas are a heaven sent delicacy compared to store-bought ones.

That being said, beware of the limitations. If you are looking to make burritos, for example, with your fresh tortillas, this won't do. The diameter of the tortillas you can produce is just too small. The other limitation is that it is difficult to get thin tortillas.

As a result, what you can produce with this is closer to what might be most purely "authentic" - a relatively small, relatively thick tortilla more suitable for eating alone or as a "soft taco" than anything else.

I like this product, but I continue to look for something to let me make larger, thinner tortillas.

Customer Review: The cast iron one worked better.
Summary: 3 Stars

My wife and I are were not very impressed with this tortilla press. Compared to a plastic one that we originally had, this one is much better. Unfortunately, it would not press tortillas as thin as we wanted, and 6.5 inches was smaller than we thought it was going to be.

We later switched to the 8 inch cast iron press that is also sold on amazon, which we have been much more satisfied with. The cast iron press will thin out our dough as thin was we want, even to the point of being too thin if we push it that hard. The size of the tortillas is much more convenient as well. If we want smaller tortillas, we just use less dough.

Customer Review: Works great for corn, not for flour tortillas.
Summary: 3 Stars

Am ambivalent about this product. Corn tortillas mash evenly, but with flour tortillas, the sides of the press flex upward. The flour tortilla requires a rolling pin to get the round, consistently flat tortilla shape. Would have rated it a 2.5 since it is in between good and bad. Am looking for a solid steel press.

Customer Review: can't get it to work right
Summary: 3 Stars

I followed the recipe and the directions but the tortillas I produced were about 3 times as thick as ones you would buy at the grocery store. They cracked and it was very had to eat them. As for the press itself, it seems to be made well. I suppose it will take some practice.
