Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro Egg Rite Egg Timer

Customer Review: It's Great!
Summary: 5 Stars

Based on other reviews, I purchased this for me and for friends as gifts. I have used it twice and it works perfectly. The first time I used it, I thought I had overcooked my eggs because the egg timer had turned completely dark (the instructions indicate hardboiled would have a little color left on the egg timer when done), however the eggs came out perfect. The 2nd time I used it, I stopped the cooking when there was a little color left on the egg timer and the eggs came out hardboild, with a little softness in the yolk. I prefer my eggs hardboild when the egg timer is completely darkend. Yes, there was a very insignificant order (the only reason I noticed it, was because of the other reviews), however, I am thinking that that may be just away to judge the cooking time, as I could not detect the odor until the eggs were almost done. Since I have now used this egg timer twice, once cooking 4 eggs and the other time cooking 6 eggs, I would suggest, start the cooking process with cold water and set a kitchen timer for 12 minutes, which will be about the time it takes for the egg timer to start to darken, then check it about every two minutes. This is really a very useful tool. I will continue to use it when I boil eggs, in fact I will boil eggs more often now, because it takes all the guesswork out of the cooking time. So it is not only convenient, but it will also make my lifestyle a little bit more healthy.

Customer Review: Egg-cellent!
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE this product!! I found it at Bed Bath & Beyond for about $5 which is rather inexpensive. I have always had a difficult time getting my eggs just right but this small, inexpensive gadget does the trick!!!

I simply put my fresh from the fridge eggs into a pot, cover them with cold water(about an inch over tops of eggs), put the 'timer' in the water with the eggs and put on stove. I set heat to high and wait for the eggs to boil, once they start boiling I keep an eye on the timer. Peering over a pot of water is not that hard and the timer is not difficult to view as the redish orange changes to a dark purpleish/blue. If all you're doing is hard boiling then you're just waiting for the ENTIRE 'timer' surface to turn that dark purplish/blue color. Once that happens, I dump the boiling water out and run my eggs under cold water and let them sit until cooled.

Since using this I haven't had those nasty green or dark green rings around the yolks, instead the yolks are light and fluffy!!! I used this product back to back for boiling 6 dozen Easter Eggs(soaking the timer in cold water until normal color returns) without issues.

The timer (for me) does NOT have an odor, it has not fallen apart, in the future if it should fall apart it's cheap enough to replace as it does the job every time.

Customer Review: Why didn't I buy it 10 years ago?
Summary: 5 Stars

This deceptively simple yet amazingly useful little tool is one of those secret gems that you love having in your kitchen day after day.

Having cooked hard boiled eggs since I was 7, and being a decent cook, I have always been frustrated by my inability to get them PERFECT time after time. After all, what could be simpler? Yet, as we all know, it is not that simple...

This egg timer is thrown into the pan with the eggs, and is able to represent graphically (through the color change of the the resin block itself) the completion of the cooking process for the eggs that accompany it. Because it represents the full cooking history, is still works at any altitude, or through changes in burner control. Once the whole resin block has changed color, it is time to take the eggs out and throw them in cold (or icy) water.

The only thing this amazing little tool lacks is an audible timer - it would be great not to have to keep an eye on the color but be reminded of the right time when the eggs are due. Of course, monitoring the color directly allows you to aim for different outcomes in the consistency of the yokes as well, by removing the pan from heat when the color change reaches one of the several intermediate marking indicators. All in all, I give it a rare 5 stars!

Customer Review: For those who want their eggs *perfect* every time
Summary: 5 Stars

Sometimes the simplest things are the hardest. I don't know if you are like me - I can get obsessed about reaching perfection for the simplest things. Such as, for instance, making an omelet - I have been working at it for 10 years. I have tried techniques, books, different pans... I still feel I can do a lot better.

Well, I also tried many different tricks about repeatably making *perfect* hard boiled eggs. One would think that it is the easiest thing in the world, eh? Well, if you are like me, more often than not they are NOT perfect. I know that I must sound like a TV commercial - but I am the ultimate sceptic. Before writing this review, I must have made at least 20 batches in the past 6 months, since I bought this device. Every single one came out *perfect* - except, of course, when I forget to check the egg timer...

I rarely endorse a product with 5 stars - this one deserves it. If you are looking for one - this is the one. Now we just need to wait till someone invents the perfect omelet maker:-)

Customer Review: Finally I can cook soft boiled eggs just right!
Summary: 5 Stars

For years I either over or undercooked eggs. Seldom could I get a soft yoke without some uncooked egg white so I didn't attempt it often. A few years ago I saw the Egg-Perfect egg timer in a store; I was skeptical but for the price it was worth a try. I've loved this little timer! I've had it for 2-3 years now and am in need of a new one since the seal between the layers has loosened on the left side so the dark red indicator on that side became a blob that bulged wide enough to indicate between Medium & Hard. The indicator on the right side was a normal, even ring between soft and medium. I don't cook boiled eggs really often but it's been a great little gadget that I don't want to be without. I am going to order several to give to family and also some to give along with wedding gifts. The only improvement would be if it had a marker that could be set at the desired hard or softness so when the dark red indicator ring got to that point a beeper would go off; but this is next best thing.
