Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro Egg Rite Egg TimerCustomer Review: Works Like A Charm! Summary: 5 Stars
For years, I have had the worst time making hard-boiled eggs, because I always boiled them for too long and my yellows came out with that bitter green film. As a result, my egg salad was virtually inedible. This device entered my life and revolutionized my egg salad! Now I make good egg salad.
This is how it works: It sits in the boiling water with the eggs, and as the eggs go from raw to hard-boiled, the timer turns from red to deep purple. The purple starts along the outside edges and gradually fills in the entire egg shaped timer. When the timer is all dark purple, your eggs are hard-boiled. If it's just purple around the edges, it's soft-boiled. Couldn't be simpler and it's very easy to see through the roiling water.
Also, the timer itself stays pretty cool to the touch, so when you take it out of the boiling water, it's just warm to the touch and easy to handle.
I now make good egg salad. I'm very pleased.
Customer Review: Important tip when using this Summary: 5 Stars
I love this thing - it's cheap, and it works well every time.
I don't know what smell people are complaining about - maybe the manufacturer has updated the material, because mine has no smell at all.
For those who've complained that you can't see the markings while the water is boiling, that's true! However, for those of you who aren't aware of how to properly make eggs, here are some instructions:
Put your eggs in a saucepan, add enough cold water to cover them by about an inch, and bring the water to a boil. Turn the heat off, and cover the pan. Allow the eggs to sit in the water until they're as done as you like. (This is easier to keep track of if you have a pan with a glass lid; otherwise, you'll need to keep checking.) Hard-boiled eggs should take somewhere around 15 minutes, give or take. (So, you won't be trying to see the markings on the egg timer through boiling water!)
Customer Review: Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm purchasing my second one of these. I'll keep my review brief. It did have a plastic smell which after boiling it in plain water went away. I won't give it a bad review just because it has that new smell like a car. This timer works great. I often boil a couple of eggs for my young daughters and walk off having no idea of how "done" they are. This timer is accurate every time although I haven't the faintest idea how it works. I'm on my second one because in my getting the girls ready for school craziness I kept leaving it in water until the end of the day when I returned home from work. It appears that is not a good idea as water apparently seeped in between the casing and it's not pretty foggy. I can't do without it and it's priced so reasonably I'm purchasing a second one and hopefully will be more disciplined about pulling it out of the pot when I remove the eggs. A wonderful item.
Customer Review: Fantastic little gadget! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this egg timer. Now that I have my own laying hens, I am overrun with eggs, and boil eggs weekly for my husband and me to snack on at work. Hubby likes them very hard boiled, while I like them between medium and hard. I've also found that it's best to cook eggs very gently, never bringing them to a full boil. Therefore, it can be hard to determine exactly how long to cook them. With this egg timer, I simply scoop out my half of the eggs when the timer is almost all black, then take the pan off the heat and let my husband's eggs sit until the water cools. We both end up with eggs exactly the way we like them. The timer is small enough to fit in my utensil drawer, convenient but out of the way.
Customer Review: Very Pleased Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of those little inexpensive trinkets for the kitchen that makes a bothersome task much easier. Since purchasing this item a few months ago we have used it numberous times and it has worked like a charm. Never again will you have under or overcooked eggs. Because it actually goes into the water it compensates for how hot your stove is. Although I did notice a slight plastic smell (from the water, not the eggs) the first time we used it, there have been no other issues - and certainly not to the extent others have described. One quick kitchen tip - when hard boiling eggs put them ice water as soon as they are done cooking, it prevents the yokes from getting green.
