Works very well. The problem with the heel digging into the meat is really not a problem. Usually is it because the person is using too much muscle into the task. The pounder is heavy enough not to use that much muscle and less muscle the more control. Suggestion for a shorter person lower the location of the meat. My 10 year who I let help me from time to time does this with no problem on a lower table. Use a little common sense people. And those who say the proper techinque to pound is down and out doesn't work. Well down and pull towards you works just as well. Takes a little practice but this device is design out of the regular thinking box so those who has problems and gives it a 1 star START THINKING OUT OF THE BOX! I do agree that this device is a bit of a problem to store but it is in easy reach in a heavy jar with my wooden spoons for cooking. The jar has to be heavy because this device makes it top heavy and topples over easily. I use this device 3 times a week and I like this pounder much better (and so does my 10 year) than the old one where you pound it like your stamping a passport. Oh and my old one I use that to crush nuts for pecan crusted cod basically the handle of the old style one is coming off and I was looking for a new one and I couldnt pass up on the price and the free shipping. It was the best decision I have made on Amazon.
Update: I find that some of the other comments on the design very interesting. You know what people use to use to pound meat a long time ago. A CAST IRON FRYING PAN! So the design is not that new. It is pretty much the same idea but smaller.
