Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro Spaetzle Maker

Customer Review: I Love My Spaeztle Maker!!
Summary: 5 Stars

A decade or so ago I toured through Europe and while in Germany I was introduced to Spaetzle. It was love at first bite. I live in a small town in California and spaetzle is not easy to come by. I bought an instant package of spaetzle, and followed the directions (pour contents of box into boiling water...) and it was terrible. Finally I decided to shop around for a Spaetzle maker and the only one I could find cost a fortune and was incredibly big and awkward, I imagined scraping my knuckles off and gave up my dreams of having fresh spaetzle. Imagine my surprise and delight when I found this simple spaetzle maker here on Amazon.com and at such a friendly price. I ordered it right before the holidays and it arrived in time for Christmas dinner. We eat our Christmas feast early in the afternoon and for a light dinner I love to make turkey soup from leftover Christmas turkey. For a twist I decided to add some fresh spaetzle and it was a wonderful success. The maker came with two simple recipes and after a couple attempts, I mastered the spaetzle maker. Since then we eat spaetle often with gravy's, soups, and tons of other dishes. This is a great deal for such a wonderful tool that will inhance you meals.

Customer Review: Quick noodles in nothing flat
Summary: 5 Stars

We eat spaetzle all the time--it's a local specialty where we live. Traditionally, the noodles are served with a garnish of browned bread crumbs. They are very good with stew, pot roast and venison. They are also made into Kaesepatzle, which is the German version of macaroni and cheese. Toss the spaetzle in a bechamel (white) sauce made with swiss or cheddar cheese. Top with sauted browned onions.

To make them, you have to get just the right touch with the very soft dough and hold a wooden board over a pot of boiling water, and cut strips off and shove them into the pot. They float, they're done. This is a messy job. Plus, your mom has to know how to make them and show you. If you don't have the advantage of generations of spaetzle making history, then you need a spaetzle maker.

The little maker is a lot easier and the price is right. It comes with some good dough recipes (I add a bit of nutmeg to mine.)

Customer Review: Great
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent spaetzle maker. The hopper type is convenient to use. It rests on the rim of the pot. A few reviewers complained about the quality of this tool. I have seen no quality issue. The plastic handle appears to be well attached and strong enough. It is not a weight bearing situation so there is no need for extra strength. The holes are of the size so the dough will not fall through easily unless the hopper is slid back and forth. That is a good feature as you don't have to worry about the dough running through before you are ready. Letting the dough drip will make very small spaetzle pieces. Just sliding it across will work fine and the spaetzel size is about right. The hopper can be slid off the rack for easier cleaning. I have not found cleaning to be a problem. Just don't let the dough sit too long on it. Wash it or soak it as soon as you are done. Great product.

Customer Review: So Easy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I looove this product! I seriously can't stop making spaetzle now - it's so easy - don't ever buy that boxed stuff at the market again. I use a recipe for quark spaetzle from Kurt Gutenbrunner here in NYC - they are so light and delicious. They can also can be made ahead of time and kept in fridge - then you can warm them up in a pan with butter and cook to desired doneness. You could add cheese or a cheese sauce or add vegetables like brussel sprout leaves, carrots, peas, mushrooms, etc. You can also make a date and bacon spaetzle and cook the spaetzle in the bacon fat...soooo good! There are so many combinations. The product is easy to clean and forms perfect, little dumplings. I also like the plastic versus the metal because i feel the metal "bucket" would get really hot over the boiling water (and you use your hand to move it back and forth). Just a thought. I'm very happy with this.

Customer Review: Easy to use, clean, store.
Summary: 5 Stars

This spaetzle maker comes apart easily for cleaning, and stores easily (pull it apart if need be -- we hang it on a pegboard in our kitchen). Using it is a dream -- no effort at all to make delicious fresh dumplings/noodles. (How I do it: mix a batter of 1/5 cups sifted flour, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg, 1/4 tsp baking powder, mix in 2 beaten eggs and 1/2 cup milk. Let sit covered in fridge for 1-24 hours. Boil salted water. Grease spaetzle maker -- I use olive oil but a cooking spray should work -- and fill the hopper halfway with dough. Move the hopper back and forth over the pot, dropping beautiful fresh noodles into the boiling watter, adding more dough when the hopper is empty or close. The spaetlze take ~3 minutes to cook, and is done when floating at the surface of the pot. Throw the cooked noodles into melted butter or a cheese sauce or whatever.)
