Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro Stainless Steel 10 Inch Egg Poacher Skillet SetCustomer Review: Great investment--and versatile! Summary: 5 Stars
Since I eat poached eggs about five days a week, I decided to splurge for a "dedicated" poacher. I wanted it to have at least 4 stainless egg cups (NOT nonstick coated) and a clear glass lid. When I read the reviews for this poacher I realized it would more than fit the bill--and I am not disappointed!
First, the egg cups are a generous size and even my jumbo eggs don't overflow the cup--a big plus! Second, as someone suggested, by simply swirling around a bit of oil or butter from one cup to the next, the cups easily release the eggs with a simple run around the edge with a butter knife. Even though the black knobs on the cups are "stay cool" they DO get hot, so be careful if you use them to remove the cups from the pan. I also like the tiny vent hole for allowing some of the steam to escape from the pan. I did notice that a fair amount of steam also seeps out from the sides of the glass lid. Speaking of the lid, it's great to be able to see the eggs cooking. I definitely think my eggs take less time to cook in this poacher than the flimsy insert I was using--and having a clear lid helped me to determine this.
Another great feature is the pan itself. It is a nice size and weight pan, and having the option to use it without the poacher insert is a big plus. It's a very generous size pan that complements the stainless set I use every day.
All in all I am very pleased with this purchase and am glad I made the investment!
Customer Review: Perfect Poached Eggs. Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best additions to our cookware we've ever made. After a couple trials of getting the times between soft and hard poached, we've got it down to a science. We keep a marked pre-measured cup, get the water as hot as the facet will start it, and bring it to a fast boil on the burner. We prefer using actual butter for coating the cups, which will stick the eggs to your cups a little bit more than olive oil would, but it's our preference. A firm tap upside down onto your plate, and the eggs are ready to eat. On our gas stove's burner, weve found that 5 minutes (from dropping in the last egg) will produce perfect soft poached eggs, and 7+ minutes if you like them hard poached. You'll want to make sure the cup handles are firmly screwed in, for a smooth exit of your poached eggs, and it helps to keep all the handles oriented to the middle of the pan during cooking, as otherwise the steam will get them hotter and make grabbing them with bare hands more tricky, and a touch painful. With this pan, we can have a great breakfast on the table in 10-15 minutes start to finish. Cleanup is quick enough. We usually pour the hot water back into the cups, and let it soak while we eat, and it's ready for scrubbing, and rinsing by the time we're done. Dry thoroughly, and put away for next time. We love it.
Customer Review: Believe these other reviews and order it Summary: 5 Stars
I don't usually write reviews but this product has made me very happy and I would like to relay my thoughts on.
I just bought my 3rd one of these poachers. The handle is not a problem, the cups don't melt, it looks great. Its worth every cent i spent and it is a good wedding gift. If its not American made, it should be. Its a simple attractive product that does the job just the way I want it to.
My concern is that I don't see where we get replacement parts in case, in 20 years or so, I need to replace the lid or cups.
I know that I should get on board with the new Ivy league management driven companies philosophies that want us to measure their sub standard cost reduced products life span in nanoseconds so we buy more and more often and to keep our economic system healthy (i.e. line their ceo's pockets) but I've had my belly's full of that tripe.
OK I'll get off the soap box. So, it would be nice to know if we can get spare parts for at least 5 years.
So in the meantime, we should pass the word to buy this "reasonably priced" good product and reward the thoughtfulness it's design. With some luck, that should help to keep it around for a while
Customer Review: This egg poacher is a 10-Star rating! Summary: 5 Stars
If there were a way to give this product 10 stars instead of 5 I would gladly do it. I received this as a Christmas gift, and I have made egg after egg after egg after egg ... and I can do no wrong. Every egg is perfect and wonderful. Every time. I have cooked one egg. I have cooked two eggs or three. I have cooked eggs for four minutes. I have cooked eggs for three minutes. I have cooked eggs for two minutes. Each time the egg is perfect, however it is that I wanted it. And it's not because of my great cooking, because I am a lazy cook who is busy reading emails instead of watching the stove.
It does take a little bit of oil on the bottom of the poaching cup, but a spray from Olive Oil Pam does the trick. This is a great boon for anyone watching their weight because there is only the tiniest of oil needed for a great poached-egg on dry toast.
Additional: I chose this product because it is stainless steel egg poaching cup and not aluminum or non-stick.
Customer Review: There is a trick to poaching without sticking... Summary: 5 Stars
I won't comment on anything else other than how to avoid having the eggs stick in the cups, which many people complain about with poachers in general. The first few times I used the poacher, I sprayed oil into the cups then put in the eggs and started the cooking. But once they were cooked, the eggs stuck like crazy in the cups. I had to scoop them out with a spoon, which wasn't so bad, but the egg remnants were impossible to get out of the cups. Here's the trick - don't just spray oil into the cups. Fill the cup with oil (I use olive oil), slosh it around, then pour the oil out. The easy way is to pour it from one cup to the next and so on until you've oiled all the cups. Then pour the remaining oil back into the oil container. Put the eggs in and cook them and they'll drop right out of the cup with no stickage at all. That's it. Do this and you'll be happy with poaching. Use an oil sprayer and you'll make a mess every time. Hear me now and believe me later.
