Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro Stainless Steel Scoop, 50mm (3-Tablespoon)Customer Review: Definitely in my "Top Ten List" of Inspired Kitchen Gadgets! Summary: 5 Stars
Finally, an ice cream scoop that gets the ice cream out of its container AND then out of the scoop into the dish. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? Should be -- but this is the first scoop design I've ever used that managed both with equal ease. Most of the old-fashioned ones had a release mechanism that got the ice cream into the dish pretty well, but needed tons of hot water and the strength of 10 men and a boy to get the goodie out of its native container. More recent versions have made the container-to-scoop process less of a herculean task, but need the assistance of finger or other appendage to make it the rest of the way to the bowl. This delightful object has solved both problems. In addition, it's a God-send for baking cookies. I operate a virtual cookie factory every Christmas and have tried many techniques to speed the dough-to-baking pan transfer. Last year, I saw this scoop and its smaller (2 teaspoon) sibling at a kitchen supply place and purchased both. I was able to bang through all my drop cookies in record time -- hurrah! Whether ice cream or cookie baking is your passion, I can't think of a better way to spend 10 bucks! Enjoy!
Customer Review: Very sturdy, well designed #24 scoop Summary: 5 Stars
This is a #24 scoop. IOW, there are 24 of these scoops in a quart. It's stamped on the release bar. Wish they still listed and sold them that way, but I guess the math isn't THAT hard.
I bought an Inox scoop this size at a very expensive kitchen shop. The notched bar kept slipping on the gears and they wouldn't go back together properly -- not to stay anyway. When the Norpro one arrived, I was greatly impressed that the notch metal bar is *twice* the thickness of the Inox, and the round gear actually has exactly enough notches for doing the job. The rest is solid. And, the release bar is beveled. Great quality!
As it turns out by comparing them, two of my other scoops are also Norpro. Neither of them has *ever* slipped, even when the grandchildren use them. Nothing but Norpro for me, from now on.
ETA: I wouldn't use this for hard ice cream; it's not designed for it. I have an older aluminum Pedrini ice cream scoop (no coating) I prefer for ice cream, because I can put a lot of muscle into that scoop and it never bends.
Customer Review: Add this to your gadget drawer! Summary: 5 Stars
Don't have this yet? What are you waiting for? This is a must for any cookie baker! You'll get perfectly round cookies everytime, and without getting your hands in the dough (unless you like to taste your creations :). It's far more efficient that the old two spoon method. You'll get those cookie sheets in the oven much more quickly! This one is a good size for making chocolate chip cookies. I use the smaller one when I'm making cookies for the kids or making peanut butter balls/chocolates ... This is a great gadget to add to your drawer. Highly recommended from a frequent cookie baker.
Customer Review: COOKIE SCOOPER Summary: 5 Stars
I have had this for at least 4 years now and i can't even imagine being without it. I bake cookies quite frequently and use this because it saves me time and all the cookies are uniformly the same size. You will get up to 4" cookies with this scooper and it makes great meatballs as well. I don't have any problems cleaning it or using it. I am ordering the smaller one knowing that i will have great success with it. Highly recommend every kitchen who does alot of baking.
UPDATE: 09/20/2009
Still working good and use it all the time.
Customer Review: You can use this for many things Summary: 5 Stars
I can't say enough about how handy these are. I love my cookie scoop. This one is very sturdy and can take heavy use. One of the benefits of making a batch of cookies with this is that they all come out the uniform size. Uniform size helps in baking evenly and also they just look better once they start out from the same size and shape. They recommend scooping up ice cream for this, but I like the 2 tablespoon size to use when I put muffin batter into a tin, there is much less clean up!
